Our Story
Our story began with a feeling that the traditional way of doing corporate daily life was off. For those living in the C-corp world, their focus at all costs, legally, had to be profits. There is a reason why so many people think of greed when they even hear the word "corporate." For decades, if someone wanted to "do good" in the world, their only option required that they not merely be unprofitable, but commit to being not profitable. This meant you had to opt to be unsustainable, living your day-to-day existence with your hand out, like Oliver Twist begging, "Please, Sir, may I have some more." Neither model reflected how life should be lived...both profitable AND purposeful.
But with the creation of Public Benefit Corporations, all of that changed. For the first time, people could actively choose to use their time, talents, and tender to build sustainable, profitable ventures to fund their visions of benefitting the world around them. While the world began to catch on to the value and benefit of Public Benefit Corporations and their draw to socially responsible investing, Christians generally have failed to see the need.
While more and more companies have taken advantage of this structure, there was no such certification within the Christian community. There was no unifying means of identifying core corporate convictions. There was no legal plan to protect "sincerely held" beliefs. There was no means to operate these newly formed for-profit companies with the same religious exemptions as a charity. There was no proactive strategy to protect First Amendment rights. There was no symbol to identify companies to end-users with similar convictions. The list goes on.

What is an MDO?
In short, an MDO is a corporation established with the overall goal of serving a public benefit and has taken the next step to become certified as a "Mission Driven Organization." The following explains why such structure and certification are vitally important for anyone who wants to be doing life meaningfully. Additionally, it explains how certification is key to proactively protecting the First Amendment Freedoms of Religion, Speech, & Association.
Historically, daily life has been divided into one of two camps: business or ministry. Those who chose business were required by law to maximize profits. This means their end goal legally was Mammon, Those who chose ministry were required by law to commit to not being profitable, and consequently, not being sustainable. Additionally, legally, they committed to having their free speech rights heavily regulated and curtailed, limiting their ability to have a voice in the culture around them. Neither structure aligns with kingdom principles. This is why there has been such increasing interest in the formation or transition to a new hybrid corporate structure, known as a B Corporation...a for-profit corporation whose primary good is to serve a public benefit. This new hybrid corporate structure provides huge opportunities for companies who wish to have both a mission to provide a public benefit with the bonus of being profitable, hence being able to sustain your mission to do good. A benefit corporation is not a non-profit organization heavily regulated by the Internal Revenue Code. Rather, it is a for-profit corporation that promotes a public benefit.

However, merely creating or transitioning to a better corporate structure is just the start of your journey to intentionally living mission-driven. The benefits of certifying your B Corp as an MDO are numerous: by adopting the copyrighted Bylaws of MDO Certified, each MDO officially affirms the same Core Corporate Convictions. This means you are now part of a larger network that formally affirms your religious convictions as sincerely held beliefs. Consequently, you may safely conduct your business in such a way as to not have those beliefs burdened, despite being a for-profit company. Additionally, your First Amendment right of free speech is equally protected, enabling your corporation to not only do good but to freely speak out about what is good. Also, your labor and employment decisions are allowed to align with these "sincerely-held" religious beliefs.
